Hudson Bay Lowlands Polar Bear Route

Muskeg roads to polar bear territory on James Bay

Extreme

This route follows old winter roads and geological survey tracks from Moosonee north to the James Bay coast, crossing 200 kilometers of muskeg, permafrost, and boreal wetlands where polar bears hunt seals during ice-up season. The track passes abandoned DEW line sites, Cree hunting camps, and reaches the actual shore of James Bay where Churchill-style polar bear encounters happen seasonally. Most of the route follows raised gravel causeways built for mining exploration, but several sections cross genuine muskeg where vehicles have disappeared.

Only attempt during late winter freeze-up (March-April) when muskeg supports vehicle weight, or late summer (August-September) during the driest conditions. Even then, expect to get stuck — carry recovery gear, shovel, boards, and satellite communication since cell service doesn’t exist. This is polar bear country during fall migration, requiring bear spray and food storage protocols. Vehicle prep includes underbody protection and recovery points. Few people reach actual Hudson Bay tidewater by vehicle — this is genuine expedition territory.
