Nantahala National Forest Joyce Kilmer Dispersed Sites
Several unmarked pull-offs along forest service roads near the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, tucked among some of the largest trees left in Appalachia. Sites are basically wide spots in old logging roads with room for 2-3 vehicles each. The canopy is so thick you’ll barely see sky. Popular with leaf-peepers in October, otherwise pretty quiet.
Roads are gravel but steep and narrow — take your time. Some sites flood during heavy spring rains. The memorial forest itself is worth the short hike to see 400-year-old tulip poplars that survived the logging era.
