Frank Church Wilderness Big Creek Access
Mining road to wilderness airstrip and solitude
Big Creek Road drops into the heart of America’s largest wilderness outside Alaska, following an old mining track to a grass airstrip where bush pilots ferry hunters and river runners into the Frank Church. The 45-mile route from Yellow Pine descends 3,000 feet through dense timber and old mining claims, ending at Big Creek Guard Station and the historic airstrip that’s served as gateway to the Middle Fork since the 1930s.
This moderate route requires high-clearance 4WD and careful attention to weather — creek crossings can become impassable during runoff or heavy rain. Open typically June through October, with best conditions mid-summer through early fall. No permits for day use, but overnight camping requires advance reservations. Fuel up in Yellow Pine; it’s your last chance for 100 miles. You’ll find solitude, fishing, and the satisfaction of reaching one of Idaho’s most remote outposts by your own wheels.
