Nez Perce Trail – Camas Prairie Section
Chief Joseph's route across Idaho's high prairie
The Camas Prairie section of the Nez Perce Trail cuts across 28 miles of rolling grasslands where Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce crossed in 1877 during their fighting retreat toward Canada. This high prairie route connects Grangeville to Cottonwood through country that still looks much like it did when the cavalry pursued the fleeing tribes. The road climbs to Winchester Ridge at 4,800 feet, offering panoramic views west to the Seven Devils and east toward the Gospel Hump Wilderness.
This is moderate territory requiring high-clearance 4WD during wet conditions when the clay-based prairie soil turns to slick gumbo. Stock vehicles handle it fine in dry weather, but bring recovery gear and check conditions after rain or snow. Best driven May through October when the camas blooms purple across the meadows. No permits needed, plenty of dispersed camping spots along ridge lines, and the nearest fuel is in Grangeville. You’ll cover ground where history happened and see Idaho backcountry most tourists never find.
