Backcountry Discovery Route – Idaho Section 3
Idaho BDR's most technical wilderness challenge
The Idaho BDR’s third section cuts through some of the most unforgiving terrain in the Frank Church Wilderness, where miners once hauled ore out on horseback and Forest Service roads now barely cling to canyon walls. This 127-mile stretch from Yellow Pine to Warren pushes through the Salmon River Mountains via Stibnite and Thunder Mountain, crossing creeks that’ll test your diff locks and navigating switchbacks where one wrong turn means a long walk out.
Expert-level technical difficulty demands a fully equipped 4WD with rock sliders, recovery gear, and emergency comms. Multiple creek crossings can run knee-deep during snowmelt, and cell service vanishes for days at a stretch. July through September offers the only reliable window, though even then weather can trap you for days. What you get is legitimate wilderness solitude, mining history that predates Idaho statehood, and bragging rights to one of the toughest BDR sections in the lower 48.
