Lolo Pass to Lochsa River Historic Route
Lewis and Clark's nightmare in modern 4x4 form
The Lochsa River cuts through some of Idaho’s most unforgiving wilderness, and this route from Lolo Pass traces the same path that nearly killed Lewis and Clark in 1805. Starting at the Montana-Idaho border on Highway 12, you’ll drop into the Lochsa drainage through dense cedar and fir forests, crossing multiple tributaries as the road deteriorates from pavement to gravel to technical 4×4 track. The real test comes at Wendover Creek, where flash floods regularly wash out the crossing and leave stranded vehicles as testament to poor timing.
This is expert-level territory requiring full skid plates, recovery gear, and a winch — the Lochsa doesn’t forgive mistakes. Best attempted July through September when water levels drop, though even then expect knee-deep crossings and muddy climbs that’ll test your differential locks. No cell service for 60 miles means self-reliance is mandatory. What you get is complete isolation in roadless wilderness where elk outnumber humans 100 to 1, plus the satisfaction of completing one of Idaho’s most notorious backcountry challenges.
