Granite Peak Access Road
Earn your access to Montana's highest peak.
Getting to Granite Peak’s trailhead means earning it on one of Montana’s most technical mountain roads. This rough forest service route climbs from the East Rosebud drainage through increasingly wild terrain, with multiple creek crossings and boulder fields that’ll scrape your undercarriage. The road ends at Mystic Lake, surrounded by 12,000-foot peaks and some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in the lower 48. Expect to air down and pick your lines carefully through the rock gardens above Emerald Lake.
Difficult rating is honest — this road chews up stock vehicles and spits out the unprepared. Modified 4WD with good armor, recovery points, and aggressive tires is minimum gear. July through September only when snow clears the high passes. No permits for the road but wilderness permits required for hiking. Cell service vanishes after the first few miles. What you get is access to Montana’s premier alpine country and some of the most remote high-country camping in the Beartooths.
