Cape Cross to Terrace Bay Skeleton Coast

The salt road from Cape Cross to Terrace Bay parallels Namibia’s notorious Skeleton Coast, where 80,000 fur seals breed among rusted shipwrecks and endless dunes meet crashing Atlantic swells. This 280-kilometer coastal track passes the Cape Cross Seal Reserve before entering the restricted Skeleton Coast Park, where permits are mandatory and self-drive access ends at Ugabmund Gate. The route threads between towering dune systems and scattered whale bones, with highlights including the Uniab River mouth and desert-adapted elephant tracks.

Moderate difficulty due to soft sand sections and river crossings that can trap inexperienced drivers. Requires 4WD with low range, sand ladders, and deflated tires for beach driving. Permits required for Skeleton Coast Park portion; book months ahead through Namibia Wildlife Resorts. Carry 60+ liters of water, spare fuel, and GPS navigation — cell service doesn’t exist.
