Silver Falls Highway Backcountry Loop
Waterfall country without the crowds
This loop combines paved Silver Falls Highway with lesser-known Forest Road 2207 and 2209 to create a backcountry circuit through some of Oregon’s finest waterfall country. The route passes South Falls and connects to remote viewpoints of Upper North Falls before diving into dense Douglas fir forest where Civilian Conservation Corps crews built stone bridges and retaining walls that still hold the road together today. Multiple creek crossings and seasonal washouts keep things interesting without requiring serious armor.
Any stock 4WD or high-clearance vehicle can handle this route when conditions are dry, but winter rains turn the dirt sections into slick clay nightmares. Best from May through October when the waterfalls are flowing but the roads are passable. No permits needed for the forest roads, though Silver Falls State Park charges day-use fees. Multiple dispersed camping opportunities along the creeks, plus established campgrounds if you prefer amenities. It’s the perfect introduction to Oregon’s forest road network without the commitment of a true backcountry expedition.
