Liberty Bell Mountain Road
Expert alpine access to North Cascades wilderness
Liberty Bell Mountain Road climbs from the Methow Valley through old-growth forest and granite cirques to reach the base of one of Washington’s most recognizable alpine peaks. The route follows an abandoned mining road that switchbacks relentlessly up Early Winters Creek drainage, crossing the creek multiple times before reaching the alpine zone at 6,400 feet. The final approach to Liberty Bell Pass requires navigating loose talus and seasonal snow patches, with the iconic bell-shaped summit looming overhead like a North Cascades cathedral.
This is expert-level terrain demanding serious 4WD capability, aggressive tires, and willingness to stack rocks at creek crossings. July through September offers the only realistic window, as snow blocks the high country most of the year. No permits required for the access road, but dispersed camping follows Leave No Trace principles in this fragile alpine environment. Bring recovery gear and spare fluids—breakdowns here mean a long walk out. The reward is unparalleled access to Cascades wilderness that most people only see from the highway.
