Pyramid Lake Historic Fishway Road
Ancient lake shores and sacred Paiute lands.
The chalk-white tufa towers rising from Pyramid Lake’s turquoise waters have watched Paiute fishermen for millennia, and this dusty shoreline track lets you chase that same ancient rhythm. The 40-mile route follows the eastern shore from Sutcliffe through the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, passing the Stone Mother formation and Anaho Island’s massive pelican colony. Washboard gravel turns to sand in places, especially near the Needles, where volcanic spires jut from the desert like broken teeth.
Moderate clearance and patience for washboard will get most vehicles through, though sand patches near water access points can catch the unprepared. Spring brings wildflowers and fishing season crowds; summer means solitude but brutal heat. No permits needed beyond tribal fishing licenses if you’re angling, but respect this sovereign land and pack out everything. The reward is camping under stars that reflect off Nevada’s largest natural lake, with silence broken only by pelican calls echoing off ancient stone.
