Death Valley Titus Canyon Road
Death Valley's legendary one-way canyon descent
The Titus Canyon Road drops you into a slot canyon so narrow your mirrors nearly scrape the limestone walls, winding past the ghost town of Leadfield where a 1920s mining scam left behind concrete foundations and rusted machinery. This 27-mile one-way route starts high in the Grapevine Mountains and plunges 3,000 feet through progressively tighter canyon walls, ending at a spectacular narrows section where bighorn sheep pick their way across vertical rock faces overhead.
Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD for the rocky descent and occasional washouts, though stock trucks handle it fine with careful driving. The road closes in summer heat (May through September) and after flash floods, so check conditions at the Furnace Creek visitor center. No camping allowed on the route itself, but you’ll emerge near Scotty’s Castle with a new respect for what water can carve through solid rock over millennia.
