Black Canyon City to Crown King
Historic mining road to Arizona's mountain crown jewel
This steep mountain road follows the old Prescott and Eastern Railway grade, climbing from desert scrub at 2,200 feet to pine forest at 5,800 feet in Crown King. The route passes abandoned mine shafts, rusted mining equipment, and the ghostly remains of Cleator before tackling a series of narrow switchbacks that demand attention. Rock slides are common, and the final approach to Crown King includes a narrow shelf road carved into granite cliffs.
Moderate to difficult depending on conditions — stock 4WD with high clearance handles it, but low range helps on the steeper grades. Winter snow closes the upper sections, making spring through fall the best window. No permits needed, but fuel up in Black Canyon City since Crown King’s general store has limited hours. The payoff is stepping into Arizona’s best-preserved mining town, complete with a saloon that’s been pouring drinks since 1904.
