Sand Tank Mountains Trailhead

Remote trailhead accessing Sand Tank Mountains Wilderness with scattered petroglyphs and desert hiking routes in southwest Arizona.

Dusty pullout and trailhead for the Sand Tank Mountains Wilderness, a rugged desert range between Yuma and Gila Bend. The area offers petroglyphs, old mining traces, and challenging desert hiking with zero shade. Parking for maybe 6-8 vehicles on rough ground. No facilities, no water, no cell service — just wilderness access and solitude.

Access via Telegraph Pass Road then rough dirt roads requiring high-clearance. Best visited October through March when temperatures are tolerable. Bring everything you need including plenty of water. Popular with serious desert hikers and rockhounds but sees light traffic overall.
