Alamo Road

Desert wilderness route to the Colorado River.

Moderate

Alamo Road cuts a lonely path through the heart of the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, connecting Highway 95 near Quartzsite to Martinez Lake on the Colorado River through 40 miles of pure Sonoran Desert wilderness. The route follows old mining roads through landscapes of towering saguaros, desert ironwood groves, and the jagged peaks of the Kofa Mountains. Castle Dome Museum marks a key waypoint where prospectors once hauled silver ore through these same washes, and the road crosses several sandy arroyos that can trap unwary drivers after flash floods.

This is moderate difficulty terrain requiring high-clearance vehicles and desert driving experience. Sand patches, embedded rocks, and wash crossings demand momentum and proper tire pressure, while the remoteness requires full self-sufficiency—fuel, water, spare parts, and recovery gear are essential. Best traveled October through April when temperatures remain tolerable. No permits needed, but check weather conditions since summer heat and flash flood potential make this route deadly dangerous. The payoff is complete solitude in one of Arizona’s wildest desert refuges, plus access to the Colorado River for fishing and camping.
