Sycamore Creek Trail

Creek crossings through red rock paradise

Moderate

Sycamore Creek carved a deep green gash through the Mazatzal Mountains, and this old ranching road follows every twist of its cottonwood-lined course past pools that shimmer turquoise against red sandstone walls. The trail starts innocuous enough from Highway 87, but by mile 4 you’re committed to multiple creek crossings where spring snowmelt can turn ankle-deep water into axle-deep adventure, especially at the notorious log jam crossing near Sycamore Falls where decades of flash floods have created a natural obstacle course.

High-clearance 4×4 minimum, with recovery gear essential during spring runoff season. Best tackled March through May when water levels are manageable but wildflowers explode across the canyon walls, or fall when creek levels drop but temperatures stay pleasant. No permits required for the trail, but camping requires Tonto National Forest regulations. Bring waders or expect wet feet, pack extra clothes, and plan for spotty cell service once you drop into the canyon. The payoff is some of Arizona’s most accessible riparian beauty.
