Hole-in-the-Rock Road Trailhead
This unassuming dirt pulloff marks the beginning of one of the West’s most ambitious pioneer routes. The Hole-in-the-Rock Road stretches 57 miles across the Kaiparowits Plateau to Lake Powell, passing slot canyons, natural arches, and the infamous notch where settlers lowered wagons down a 2,000-foot cliff. Most overlanders tackle sections rather than the full route — Devil’s Garden (mile 12) and Dance Hall Rock (mile 36) are popular turnarounds.
The road starts smooth enough for any vehicle but deteriorates significantly after mile 20, requiring high clearance and eventually 4WD. Weather matters hugely here — the clay-based surface becomes impassable when wet. Stock up on fuel and water in Escalante before heading out; there’s nothing but wilderness for the next 50+ miles.
