Los Llanos Orinoco Wetlands Traverse Venezuela
Seasonal wetlands traverse through cattle country
Los Llanos stretch across 300,000 square kilometers of Venezuela’s heartland, transforming from dust bowl to inland sea with each rainy season. Your route follows elevated ranch roads (terrapléns) built by cowboys to move cattle above floodwaters, threading between lagoons where pink dolphins surface among floating cattle. The critical crossing is at Puente Páez over the Río Portuguesa, where seasonal water levels determine whether you drive or float your way across.
This is moderate difficulty during dry season (December-April) but becomes impassable during floods. High clearance essential for the ranch roads; many estancias require permission to cross private land. Carry extra fuel — gas stations are 150 kilometers apart. You’ll camp on elevated ground while listening to howler monkeys and watching the southern sky light up with more stars than seem possible. Bring mosquito nets and expect to share camp with curious capybaras.
