Laguna de los Pozuelos Vicuña Observatory
Pozuelos sits in a stunning altiplano bowl where the silence is broken only by wind and the distant calls of thousands of flamingos. Three species — Chilean, Andean, and James’s — wade through the shallow alkaline waters while vicuñas graze the surrounding grasslands. The lake’s mineral content creates an otherworldly blue-green that shifts with the light.
Access via rough dirt road from Abra Pampa — high-clearance recommended for the rocky approach. Altitude hits hard at 3,500 meters; take it slow. The observation area has basic interpretive signs but no facilities. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best wildlife viewing and photography light.
