Quebrada de Uquía Pre-Columbian Fortress Circuit
Secret ruins in Argentina's forgotten highlands
Hidden in the high quebradas east of Uquía lie the scattered ruins of pre-Columbian hill forts that once guarded ancient trade routes through the Puna. The access track splits from the main Uquía road and climbs steeply through loose rock and sand washes to reach fortified settlements at 3,800 meters elevation. These aren’t tourist ruins — you’ll often have the massive stone walls and terraced compounds entirely to yourself, with views across the endless altiplano stretching toward Bolivia.
This moderate-difficulty route demands high clearance and steady driving skills rather than hardcore technical ability, though the loose surfaces and steep grades will test vehicle and driver. The main challenge is navigation through unmarked tracks and potential for sudden weather changes at altitude. Best visited March to November when roads are passable, though winter crossings are possible with preparation. Pack extra water, warm clothes, and GPS navigation as cell service disappears quickly. The reward is exploring some of Argentina’s most pristine archaeological sites without crowds or commercialization.
