Parque Nacional Lanín Volcán Lanín Circuit

Patagonian volcano circuit through ancient forests

Difficult

The Volcán Lanín circuit takes you through some of the most pristine Araucaria araucana forests in Patagonia, where thousand-year-old monkey puzzle trees stand guard around Argentina’s most photogenic volcano. Starting from Junín de los Andes, the route winds through Mapuche communities around Lago Huechulafquen and Lago Paimún, then climbs through technical sections around Laguna Verde before connecting back via the northern approach. The contrast hits hard—emerald lakes reflecting snow-capped peaks, then dropping into dense lenga forests that feel like Middle Earth.

Difficult rating due to steep, rocky climbs and river crossings that can turn nasty fast. High-clearance 4WD mandatory, with good tires and recovery gear essential. Weather changes quickly—even summer can dump snow above 1,500 meters. Peak season runs December through March, but shoulder seasons offer solitude at the cost of unpredictable conditions. This circuit delivers serious wilderness and cultural immersion, but demands respect for both the terrain and Mapuche traditions.
