Ruta Nacional 40 Paso del Viento High Route

High plateau crossing with serious river fords

Difficult

The Paso del Viento section of Ruta Nacional 40 cuts through some of Neuquén’s most unforgiving plateau country, where relentless winds and sudden weather changes test both machine and driver. This 47-kilometer stretch between Zapala and the Cordillera del Viento massif climbs steadily through volcanic badlands and exposed steppes, with the notorious Río Neuquén crossing at Bajada Colorada presenting the route’s biggest challenge when spring snowmelt turns it into a churning torrent.

Rated difficult due to high-altitude exposure, unpredictable river levels, and zero services between waypoints. Stock high-clearance 4WD minimum, with recovery gear and extra fuel essential. Best tackled late summer through early fall when river levels drop and weather windows extend. The reward is uncompromised solitude in one of Argentina’s most geologically dramatic regions, with views of snow-capped Andean peaks stretching to the Chilean border.
