Camping Las Truchas Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay
Set at 1,200 meters in old-growth southern beech forest, this 15-site campground serves as base camp for exploring the volcanic landscape around Volcán Descabezado. Sites are well-spaced among massive trees, each with a fire ring and picnic table. Vault toilets are clean and there’s potable water from mountain springs. The campground fills up during January-February peak season.
Access is via 8 kilometers of gravel road from the village of Vilches — passable for any vehicle but gets rough after heavy rains. CONAF rangers collect fees and sell firewood. Popular trailhead for the Laguna del Alto trek and routes toward Cerro Pinto. Open December through April only due to snow at elevation.
