Medicine Park Granite Boulder Technical Loop

Oklahoma's gnarliest granite boulder challenge

Expert

The Medicine Park Granite Boulder Technical Loop carves through one of Oklahoma’s most challenging rock gardens, where massive pink granite boulders the size of houses create a natural obstacle course that’s been testing 4×4 skills since the first jeeps rolled through these hills. Starting from the historic cobblestone streets of Medicine Park, the route immediately climbs into the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, threading between formations that emerged from molten magma 525 million years ago. The technical crux comes at Devil’s Canyon, where drivers must pick precise lines through house-sized granite blocks while navigating around ancient boulder piles that would stop a tank.

This is expert-level rock crawling that demands full skid plates, rock sliders, and drivers with serious technical skills — multiple vehicles have needed winch rescues from the tighter sections. Best tackled in fall through early spring when rattlesnakes are dormant and temperatures stay reasonable for recovery work. No permits required, but fuel up in Medicine Park and carry plenty of water. You’ll earn every mile of this 12-mile loop, plus bragging rights for conquering one of Oklahoma’s gnarliest granite challenges.
