Palo Duro Canyon State Park CCC Trail System

CCC roads to hidden springs in Texas's Grand Canyon

Difficult

The Civilian Conservation Corps carved these service roads into Palo Duro Canyon’s rim rock during the 1930s, creating access to geological wonders most visitors never see. The main route drops 800 feet from rim to canyon floor via a series of switchbacks cut into Permian red rock, then follows the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River past hidden springs and fossil-rich limestone exposures. The most challenging section navigates the technical descent to Capitol Peak, where loose shale and narrow shelf roads demand careful line choice and steady nerves as you descend past 250-million-year-old rock layers.

This is advanced high-clearance territory requiring experienced drivers and quality tires for the loose rock and exposed shelf roads. Avoid during storms when flash floods can trap vehicles in the canyon bottom for days. State park permit required, and camping is restricted to designated areas only. Best tackled in cooler months when summer heat won’t leave you stranded with an overheated engine. The reward is exclusive access to one of Texas’s most spectacular geological showcases, including springs that have flowed continuously since Comanche times and fossil beds that tell the story of ancient inland seas.
