Cross Timbers Mining District Heritage Trail
Iron ore heritage meets Cross Timbers challenge.
This forgotten mining road winds through the Cross Timbers region where 1800s iron ore operations carved deep scars into the limestone hills. The trail connects three abandoned mining sites via technical creek crossings and rocky ledges, including the challenging ford at Pecan Creek where spring rains turn a simple crossing into a muddy wrestling match. Rusted machinery and stone foundations mark waypoints through dense oak and mesquite forests.
Stock 4WD handles most sections, but the limestone ledges near Mile 8 and the Pecan Creek crossing demand careful spotting and good tires. Best tackled in fall when creeks run low and temperatures drop below triple digits. No permits required, but respect private property boundaries marked with purple paint. Primitive camping allowed at the old mining camp clearing. You’ll earn views across the Brazos River valley and a lesson in Texas industrial history.
