Davis Mountains Fort Davis to McDonald Observatory High Route
Sky island traverse to Texas' astronomical crown
The Fort Davis to McDonald Observatory High Route climbs through the Davis Mountains along old ranch roads and forest service tracks that connect the historic frontier outpost with one of the world’s premier astronomical research facilities. Starting at 5,050 feet in Fort Davis, the route spirals up through juniper and oak woodlands, crossing Miller Creek and climbing toward Mount Locke’s 6,791-foot summit where the Hobby-Eberly Telescope dominates the skyline. The technical challenge comes at Sawtooth Mountain gap, where loose volcanic rock and steep grades test both vehicle and driver.
High-clearance 4WD essential for the rocky sections above 6,000 feet, though stock vehicles can manage the lower elevations in dry conditions. Best attempted April through October when mountain weather stays predictable and observatory road access remains open. The route offers exceptional stargazing opportunities at designated pull-offs, though light discipline is mandatory near the observatory. Water and fuel available in Fort Davis, but nothing exists on the mountain. The payoff includes some of Texas’ most dramatic mountain vistas and potential mountain lion encounters in the higher elevations.
