Solid brick visitor center sitting at mile 1229 of the Alaska Highway, right where you cross from Canada into Alaska proper. Clean restrooms, drinking water, and detailed exhibits on boreal forest wildlife and the refuge’s massive 700,000 acres. Staff here know the current road conditions ahead and wildlife activity — worth the stop for intel on what’s coming. Small parking area handles RVs fine.
Open seasonally May through September, closed winters. The refuge stretches for miles on both sides of the highway from here — prime moose and caribou country. No overnight camping at the center itself, but dispersed options exist throughout the refuge with proper regulations.
Alaska's threshold visitor center with wilderness intel.
