Osage Hills State Park Buffalo Creek Backcountry Circuit

Prairie bottomland and creek crossings in Osage country

Moderate

Buffalo Creek cuts deep into the Osage Hills here, creating a mix of sandstone ledges and prairie bottomland that most folks never see. This loop pulls you away from the main campground into the park’s backcountry, following old ranch roads and fire breaks through stands of blackjack oak and bluestem grass. The route crosses Buffalo Creek three times — usually ankle-deep but can flash after storms — and climbs past Wind Cave to a ridgeline overlook of the Osage Nation.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent weather and creek levels. Stock high-clearance vehicles handle it fine in dry conditions, but 4WD helps in the creek beds and muddy bottomland. Best run spring through fall when water levels are predictable. No permits needed since it’s within state park boundaries. The payoff is solitude in Oklahoma’s remaining tallgrass country and some of the best stargazing in the state once you’re away from Tulsa’s glow.
