Ouachita National Forest Talimena Scenic Drive Backcountry Circuit
Ouachita Mountains backcountry beyond the tourist drive
The Talimena Scenic Drive gets all the tourist traffic, but the real treasure lies in the spider web of forest service roads branching off into Oklahoma’s Ouachita Mountains. Forest Road 6032 drops steep into Horse Thief Springs hollow, while FR 6010 climbs through hardwood forests to Rich Mountain’s fire tower, elevation 2,681 feet. These gravel and dirt tracks connect old CCC camp sites, abandoned mining claims, and remote hunting camps that most visitors never see.
This is moderate to difficult terrain requiring high-clearance 4WD for the steeper descents and creek crossings. Spring rains turn clay sections into wheel-sucking gumbo, making fall through early winter the prime season. The Ouachita National Forest allows dispersed camping, and cell service exists on ridgetops but vanishes in hollows. Pack extra water and recovery gear — you’re genuinely remote once you leave the main scenic highway. The payoff is solitude in some of Oklahoma’s most beautiful mountain country.
