Santa Elena Canyon Rio Grande Access
The Rio Grande disappears into towering limestone walls at Santa Elena Canyon, creating one of Big Bend’s most spectacular and accessible sights. A 0.8-mile trail crosses Terlingua Creek (can be knee-deep after rains) before reaching the canyon mouth where Mexican and American cliff faces tower overhead. The overlook offers perfect photo ops of the narrow gorge cutting through Mesa de Anguila.
Trail is well-maintained but creek crossing can stop low-clearance vehicles during high water periods (typically late summer monsoons). Park at the large lot off Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, 8 miles from Castolon. No shade along the trail, so early morning or late afternoon visits are best in summer. Interpretive signs explain the canyon’s geology and cultural history.
