Skaftafell Visitor Centre Camping
This sprawling campground sits in the shadow of Europe’s largest glacier system, with direct access to Skaftafell’s famous ice caves and glacier walks. The site handles 500+ people in summer, mostly in RVs and expedition rigs staging for F985 glacier routes and Svínafellsjökull access. Facilities include heated washrooms, coin showers, and a camp kitchen that stays busy until midnight during peak season.
Access is straightforward off Route 1, but the gravel loops can turn to soup during rainy spells. Book ahead June through August or expect to circle for hours looking for a spot. Winter camping is allowed but services shut down October through March.
