Vatnshellir Lava Cave

Point of Interest

This ancient lava cave burrows 200 meters into the Snæfellsnes Peninsula’s volcanic foundation, created 8,000 years ago during eruptions from the Purkhólar crater row. The cave descends 35 meters through chambers lined with twisted lava formations and mineral deposits that glisten under headlamp beams. Guided tours run year-round, leading groups down rocky passages where temperatures hold steady at 3°C.

Access via a short walk from the parking area off Route 574. Tours require advance booking and include helmets and lights. The cave stays open regardless of weather, making it a solid backup when surface conditions turn nasty. No special gear needed beyond warm clothes and sturdy boots.
