Ozark Plateau Glass Mountain Serpentine Trail
Ozark foothills technical challenge
The Ozark Mountains spill into northeastern Oklahoma as rolling hills covered in oak and hickory, but don’t let the greenery fool you — this is serious 4×4 country. The Glass Mountain Serpentine Trail follows old cattle paths and hunting roads across private ranches near Salina, winding through technical rock gardens of Pennsylvanian sandstone and crossing Wilson Creek multiple times. The route climbs steep ridges where loose shale tests traction control, then plunges into hollers where muddy creek bottoms can swallow trucks.
This is expert-level terrain requiring lockers, winch, and serious off-road experience. Spring flooding makes creek crossings dangerous — late summer through fall offers the best conditions. Most trail crosses private land requiring permission from multiple landowners. No official camping, but dispersed camping possible with landowner approval. Fuel and supplies available in Salina. The reward is classic Ozark scenery and solitude in rugged country that challenges both driver and machine.
