Kiamichi Mountains Ouachita Backcountry Trail
Remote Kiamichi wilderness adventure
The Kiamichi Mountains stretch across southeastern Oklahoma like a green fortress, and this backcountry network threads through some of the most remote terrain in the state. Starting near Talihina, the route follows old logging roads and jeep tracks through dense hardwood forests, crossing Half Moon Creek and navigating rocky ridgelines that test ground clearance. The trail system connects various Forest Service roads, including challenging sections near Winding Stair Mountain that demand careful line selection through boulder fields.
This is moderate to difficult territory requiring high-clearance 4WD and recovery gear. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, though creek crossings can be impassable after heavy rains. No permits needed, but fuel up in Talihina — the nearest services are 50+ miles away once you’re deep in the mountains. Dispersed camping is excellent throughout the forest. You’ll earn sweeping views of the Arkansas River Valley and complete solitude in one of Oklahoma’s last true wilderness areas.
