Dettifoss Waterfall Viewpoint
Massive waterfall dropping 44 meters with tremendous force, creating a roar you can hear from kilometers away and mist that soaks the surrounding black basalt landscape. Two viewpoints exist — the western side via Route 862 offers closer views but requires river fording, while the eastern approach via paved Route 864 provides safer access with slightly more distant views. The falls flow at roughly 200 cubic meters per second, making it Europe’s most voluminous waterfall.
The western Route 862 approach involves multiple unbridged river crossings and is recommended for experienced 4WD operators only. Eastern access is suitable for any vehicle. Best light for photography is morning from the west side, afternoon from the east. Parking areas get crowded in summer, but short walks upstream or downstream offer solitude with equally dramatic canyon views.
Europe's most powerful waterfall.
