Snæfellsnes Peninsula Coastal Highland Circuit

Jules Verne's gateway to Earth's center

Moderate

This circuit around Snæfellsjökull glacier winds from black pebble beaches where seals haul out near Arnarstapi up through highland tracks that Jules Verne used as the entrance to the center of the earth. The route combines coastal F-roads with highland approaches to Snæfellsjökull National Park, threading between columnar basalt formations and through lava tube systems where you can walk inside the earth’s volcanic plumbing. The climb to Öndverðarnes lighthouse tests traction on loose volcanic gravel with Atlantic winds threatening to push you toward cliff edges.

Moderate to difficult depending on weather, requiring high-clearance vehicle for highland sections and careful driving on coastal cliff roads. Best attempted May through October when highland access opens, though coastal sections remain passable year-round with proper winter gear. No permits required but check weather and road conditions as Atlantic storms can make coastal sections dangerous. Bring recovery gear for soft volcanic soil and plenty of water as services are limited. The payoff includes some of Iceland’s most dramatic coastal scenery plus access to Jules Verne’s literary inspiration, with camping allowed at designated areas throughout the peninsula.
