Westfjords Peninsula Mountain Circuit
Fjord-hopping through Iceland's wildest corner
The Westfjords throw everything Iceland has at you – knife-edge mountain passes dropping into mirror-perfect fjords, roads that cling to clifftops 1,000 feet above crashing waves, and enough potholes and washboard to rattle teeth loose. This circuit links the region’s scattered fishing villages via mountain tracks that close completely in winter, winding through valleys where Arctic foxes outnumber people and abandoned farms slowly return to wilderness. The notorious Djúpvegur mountain pass tests nerves with steep grades and no guardrails, while the coastal sections around Hornstrandir deliver some of Europe’s most spectacular cliff-top driving.
Moderate to difficult depending on conditions, requiring good ground clearance and steady nerves for exposed mountain sections. Gravel roads stay rough but passable for capable vehicles May through October, though weather can shut passes without warning. Fuel and supplies limited to major towns – carry extra fuel for 200+ mile stretches. Cell service sporadic at best. This route rewards the committed with untouched landscapes, empty roads, and fjord views that make Norway look crowded. Pure Iceland at its most remote and beautiful.
