Donner Memorial State Park Campground
This established state park sits right on Donner Lake’s eastern shore, offering 150 campsites split between lakeside and wooded areas. The campground fills quickly in summer with families and RVers, but shoulder seasons offer more space and better rates. Sites have picnic tables, fire rings, and access to clean restrooms with hot showers. The on-site museum tells the grim story of the Donner Party with artifacts and exhibits.
Located just off I-80, it’s an easy staging point for Sierra adventures with Truckee’s shops and restaurants five minutes away. The campground stays open year-round, though some loops close in winter. Summer reservations are essential – book months ahead for July and August weekends.
