Sawtooth National Forest City of Rocks Back Basin Dispersed Area
A cluster of primitive sites nestled in the granite towers and Joshua trees behind the main City of Rocks formation. The area offers incredible sunrise and sunset lighting on the sculpted spires, with most sites tucked into sandy washes that provide wind protection. Capacity varies seasonally — summer brings climbers, but spring and fall offer near-solitude among some of Idaho’s most dramatic geology.
Access requires navigating several unmarked dirt roads through sagebrush country — GPS recommended. The final approach crosses a seasonal creek that can be problematic during snowmelt. No water, no facilities, no cell service. Pack extra water and plan for self-recovery if conditions deteriorate.
