Moshannon State Forest Dark Run Road Dispersed Area
Dark Run Road winds along a ridge at 2,200 feet elevation with pulloffs and clearings that make excellent dispersed camps. The area sits in one of Pennsylvania’s darkest sky regions — on clear nights the Milky Way stretches horizon to horizon without a single streetlight in sight. Sites are spaced along three miles of forest road with room for rigs up to 35 feet. Stone fire rings mark the most established spots, and there’s enough deadfall for campfires year-round.
The road surface is decent gravel most of the way, but the last mile to the best ridge-top sites gets rocky and requires high clearance. Popular during meteor showers and fall foliage season. Water sources are scarce — Dark Run itself is seasonal and often dry by midsummer.
