Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces

Point of Interest

Mammoth Hot Springs creates a series of white limestone terraces that cascade down the hillside like frozen waterfalls. Hot water deposits calcium carbonate as it flows, building these stepped formations over thousands of years. The terraces constantly change as springs shift and new deposits form, with some areas appearing snow-white while others show orange and yellow mineral staining.

Both upper and lower terrace areas are accessible by car, with boardwalks providing close viewing of active springs. Some terraces dry up and become dormant while new ones form elsewhere. The area stays relatively warm year-round due to the thermal activity, making it accessible even in Yellowstone’s harsh winters when other areas close.
