Giant Sequoia National Monument General Sherman Tree
General Sherman isn’t just big — it’s incomprehensibly massive. This giant sequoia weighs an estimated 1,385 tons and contains enough wood to build 120 average houses. The paved half-mile trail from the parking area drops 200 feet through a grove of other ancient giants, but Sherman dominates them all. Peak season (summer weekends) brings tour buses and crowds, but early morning or late afternoon visits offer more solitude among these living monuments.
The main parking area sits at 7,000 feet and fills fast during summer. Wolverton Road provides winter access when Generals Highway closes. Snow can linger into May at this elevation, making the trail slippery but magical when the grove wears a white blanket.
