Carlsbad Caverns National Park Big Room
The Big Room sits 750 feet underground and stretches over 8 acres, making it one of the largest natural limestone chambers in North America. Stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone formations create an otherworldly landscape maintained at a constant 56°F year-round. The self-guided trail covers 1.25 miles on mostly level surfaces with some steep sections. Most visitors take the high-speed elevator down, though the natural entrance trail offers a more dramatic descent through the cave mouth.
The park entrance sits 7 miles southwest of Carlsbad via Highway 62/180. Arrive early during peak season (June-August) as elevator tickets can sell out. The famous bat flight program runs May through October at the natural entrance amphitheater. No photography allowed in certain sensitive areas.
Underground chamber the size of 14 football fields
