Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge Access Road

This muddy bastard cuts through the heart of Costa Rica’s northeastern wetlands, where the Tortuguero Canal system meets the Caribbean. The 45-kilometer track from Cariari to Barra del Colorado village winds through primary rainforest and vast palm plantations, crossing dozens of creeks via sketchy wooden bridges that’ll test your nerves. Halfway through, you’ll hit the notorious Caño Palma crossing — a metal ferry platform that’s been known to strand vehicles for days when the river runs high.

Moderate difficulty but don’t let that fool you — rainy season turns this into a proper mud wrestling match requiring 4WD with serious ground clearance and recovery gear. Dry season (December-April) offers the best passage, though flooding can happen anytime. No permits needed but fuel up in Cariari — there’s nothing reliable until Barra del Colorado. The payoff is accessing one of Costa Rica’s most isolated coastal communities and world-class tarpon fishing waters where the San Juan River meets the sea.
