Cordillera Central Coffee Finca High Route

This high-altitude traverse connects historic coffee fincas through the Cordillera Central spine between Tarrazú and Dota Valley, following precipitous plantation access roads built in the 1920s for ox-cart transport. The route peaks at Finca La Minita at 6,200 feet elevation, where narrow switchbacks cling to volcanic slopes with thousand-foot dropoffs into the valley. Several finca owners still maintain these roads for harvest transport, creating seasonal traffic conflicts with massive coffee trucks on impossibly narrow tracks.

Moderate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD and steady nerves for exposed mountain driving. Road conditions vary dramatically by season — dry season (December-April) offers firm packed earth while wet season creates slippery clay that’s genuinely dangerous. Most fincas welcome respectful visitors but this is working agricultural land, not a park.
