Manzanar National Historic Site

Former WWII Japanese American internment camp turned National Historic Site with visitor center and reconstructed barracks.

Manzanar sits 6 miles south of Lone Pine on US-395, marking one of America’s darkest chapters with preserved foundations, reconstructed guard towers, and a cemetery monument. The visitor center houses powerful exhibits and documentary film, while a 3.2-mile auto tour loops through the camp’s remains. Free entry, open year-round except major holidays.

The site gets busy with tour groups mid-morning through afternoon. Parking is ample but can fill during peak tourist season. Strong cell service makes this a good resupply stop before heading into the backcountry. Water and restrooms available at the visitor center.
