Cerro de la Muerte Highland Páramo Traverse

Costa Rica's highest vehicle-accessible terrain

Expert

The notorious ‘Mountain of Death’ backcountry network branches off the main Pan-American Highway at 3,400 meters, accessing Costa Rica’s highest vehicle-accessible terrain through alpine páramo grasslands. Old logging roads and telecommunication service tracks penetrate Chirripó massif foothills, reaching weather stations at 3,600+ meters where temperatures drop near freezing year-round. The technical challenge lies in sudden weather shifts and navigation through fog-shrouded oak forest transitions.

Expert-level route requiring proper cold-weather gear and GPS navigation when clouds roll in without warning. Any 4WD handles the grades but mud season (September-November) makes some sections impassable. Fuel up in San Gerardo de Dota as no services exist above 3,000 meters. Dry season offers clearest access to páramo viewpoints but afternoon fog still threatens visibility. The payoff: reaching Costa Rica’s roof through landscapes that feel more like Scottish highlands than Central America.
