Quaker settlers' cloud forest mountain climb
The steep gravel climb from San Ramón to Monteverde follows the original oxcart route carved by Quaker settlers in the 1950s. This 35-kilometer mountain road gains over 1,200 meters elevation through coffee fincas and remnant cloud forest, with jaw-dropping views across the Tilarán range. The notorious ‘Devil’s Corner’ section near kilometer 18 demands careful navigation of loose rock switchbacks carved into near-vertical mountainside.
Difficult conditions year-round but worst during September-November rains when landslides close sections for days. High-clearance 4WD essential for the steepest grades above 1,400m elevation. Stock fuel tank sufficient but carry extra water and recovery gear. Dry season offers clearer views and better road surface, though dust becomes choking. The payoff: direct access to Monteverde’s pristine cloud forest reserves without tourist shuttle hassles.
