Rancho Mike’s Sky Camp Observatory Dispersed Area
Scattered camping spots at 8,500 feet elevation along the observatory access road, offering some of the darkest skies in North America. Rocky sites accommodate 6-8 rigs with enough space between them for privacy. No facilities — pack everything out. The observatory dome is visible in the distance, and on clear nights you can see the Pacific and Gulf of California simultaneously.
Access requires high-clearance 4WD for the final 8 miles of rough mountain road. Snow possible November through March at this elevation. Rangers occasionally patrol but camping is tolerated as long as you follow Leave No Trace principles. Bring layers — temperatures drop 40+ degrees from daytime highs.
